The fear behind this question is understandable: a mouth-blown glass this thin looks like it belongs nowhere near a machine. The reality is the opposite, and it is worth understanding why before you buy - or before you wash your first one.
Why such thin crystal survives a dishwasher
Zalto glasses are mouth-blown from lead-free crystal and finished with a deliberately slow cooling phase that gives the material its elasticity and strength. Thin does not mean brittle. Most breakage happens in hands, not machines: twisting the stem while polishing, gripping the foot while drying, knocking the rim against a tap. Zalto's own care instructions name manual polishing as the most frequent cause of breakage - and the dishwasher is the method that makes it unnecessary.
The settings that matter
- Programme: a delicate or glass cycle at 55 °C or below, the shortest available - excessive heat speeds up glass corrosion.
- Loading: glasses secure and not touching each other or anything metal; keep tall, narrow glasses out of the corners so the water reaches every part.
- Before the cycle: rinse wine residue off soon after use (wine acidity attacks the glass), and make sure heavily soiled pans are not sharing the load.
- Detergent: a quality powder (easiest to dose low) or all-in-one tab - tabs already contain rinse aid, so skip extra additives. Avoid "phosphate-free" detergents with aggressive substitutes.
- Water: hardness set between 3 and 8 with salt topped up. Counterintuitively, very soft water corrodes glass faster than hard water, so do not soften below that range; dose rinse aid slightly higher instead, without overdosing.
- After: open the door ajar to release steam, let the glasses cool fully, then lift them by the stem or base so you leave no fingerprints on the bowl.

Is hand-washing gentler?
Chemically, yes - mechanically, no. Hand-washing is where stems snap, because the glass is twisted between two hands. If you do wash by hand, cradle the bowl gently in your hand with the stem between your index and middle finger, never grip the foot while polishing, and use a soft cloth washed without fabric softener. For most people, most of the time, the machine is the lower-risk choice.
